Learnt Novelty with Overlapping Neural Cell Assemblies

چکیده

Cell Assemblies (CAs) are central to many higher order cognitive processes such as perception, recognition, and recollection. Concepts are encoded as neuronal CAs in mammalian cortical areas, where CA formation and learning happen based on the Hebbian CA theory. Multiple CAs may share a common subset of neurons that produce dynamics that distinct, localist, orthogonal CAs do not exhibit, such as inherent support for generalisation and learnt novelty. This paper discusses implicit learning of novel behaviour in overlapping CAs, with a simulated agent based on a biologically realistic neural CA model.

Complex activity patterns generated by short-term synaptic plasticity

Short-term synaptic plasticity (STSP) affects the efficiency of synaptic transmission for persistent presynaptic activities. We consider attractor neural networks, for which the attractors are given, in the absence of STSP, by cell assemblies of excitatory cliques. We show that STSP may transform these attracting states into attractor relics, inducing ongoing transient-state dynamics in terms o...

Visual Novelty Detection for Inspection Tasks using Mobile Robots

Novelty detection – the ability to differentiate between common sensory stimuli and perceptions never experienced before – is a very useful competence for a mobile robot operating in a dynamic environment. Using such an ability, the robot can select which aspects of the environment are unusual and therefore deserve the attention from either a human operator – for instance, in supervised inspect...

A Pong playing agent modelled with massively overlapping cell assemblies

Cell assemblies (CAs) are central to many higher order cognitive processes such as perception, recognition and recollection. These processes stem from the fundamental cognitive tasks of memorisation and association, which CA models are able to perform with a viable degree of biological realism. This paper describes a virtual agent that uses CAs that emerge from fatiguing leaky integrate and fir...

Overlapping patterns of neural activity for different forms of novelty in fMRI

When stimuli are presented multiple times, the neural response to repeated stimuli is reduced relative to novel stimuli (repetition suppression). Responses to different types of novelty were examined. Stimulus novelty was examined by contrasting first vs. second presentation of triads of objects during memory encoding. Semantic novelty was contrasted by comparing unrelated (semantically novel) ...

Neuronal Assembly Detection and Cell Membership Specification by Principal Component Analysis

In 1949, Donald Hebb postulated that assemblies of synchronously activated neurons are the elementary units of information processing in the brain. Despite being one of the most influential theories in neuroscience, Hebb's cell assembly hypothesis only started to become testable in the past two decades due to technological advances. However, while the technology for the simultaneous recording o...
